Better Block KC is an organization that helps Kansas City visualize the potential for great, walkable and vibrant neighborhoods. Through the coordination of a strong design team and the help of local volunteers, Better Block KC gives Kansas Citians the opportunity to feel the impact of investing in their neighborhoods.
Our mission through volunteer efforts, donated materials and community input, is to help neighborhoods visualize, interact with, and temporarily transform their city streets to become safer for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. Our temporary installations give community members the opportunity to collaborate with their neighbors to make their public spaces the best representation of their history, culture and future.
Do you want to see a Better Block demonstration in your neighborhood? Do you want to volunteer at an upcoming event? Do you have any questions about what else we do? Please reach out to us by email or social media. Our team is always interested in hearing new ideas and bringing anyone who is passionate about their city on board.
18th and Oak
In October, we will maintain a monthlong road diet along Oak Street at 18th and 19th in the Crossroads.
Our design includes a two-way mobility lane / cycle track, planter-lined bulb outs, and on-street parking corrals for bikes and scooters.
Below are some of our past projects. Each neighborhood offered unique challenges and opportunities.
33rd St. & Troost Ave. - 2017
Neighbors experienced a reimagined streetscape at 33rd and Troost, featuring parking-protected bike lanes, tree-lined sidewalks,
community artwork and enhanced floating transit stops.
18th Street - 2016
Working to connect 18th & Vine and the Crossroads Arts District, Better Block KC activated two blocks under 71 Highway with protected bike lanes, historic displays, inviting seating, artists, vendors and plant life.
Our 10-foot lanes dramatically calmed traffic, making travel safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
Boulevardia - 2015 & 2016
Better Block KC partnered with the Boulevardia team to develop Greenville, a unique street-to-park transformation in the West Bottoms.
Broadway & Westport Rd. - 2014
In partnership with BikeWalkKC, Better Block KC launched a new B-Cycle station at 40th & Broadway and showed the full potential of a historic neighborhood with street performances, sidewalk cafes, street parks, protected bike lanes and crosswalks.
19th & Main Street - 2013
Before 19th & Main became the lively Crossroads KC Streetcar stop, Better Block KC envisioned Main as a complete street with bike amenities, food storefronts, and a mock KC Streetcar and shelter. Mayor Sly James dropped by to unveil the new KC Streetcar design at a press conference held in our pop-up “Made in KC” open-air market.
16th & Grand Blvd. - 2012
Better Block KC’s first project completely transformed
16th & Grand with a monsoon of greenery, bike lanes, pop-up shops and a narrowed street.
